Taif International Airport Project
This project involves construction of a new international airport at Taif in Mecca province. The planned airport will replace the existing domestic airport, whose expansion has been planned since 2008, but which has been put on hold. The new airport will be located northeast of Taif Province near Souk Okaz, about 120 kilometers from Mecca. It will have a design capacity of five million passengers annually and eventually reach eight million passengers in the future. The airport will initially include one runway extending 4,300 meters, with the provision for a second runway if required. When completed, it will be the third international airport catering to Hajj and Umrah visitors in addition to the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina. The extent of work likewise incorporates remodel work of Taif residential airplane terminal, 4.3 kilometers runways with an arrangement for a second runway whenever required, terminals, control tower, cover, traveler lobby, administration structures, VIP corridor, VIP relax, mosque, shops, banking administrations and travel and the travel industry office. Client is seeking private investors to finance, design, build and operate the new airport. The deadline to submit prequalification applications is July 09, 2015. The selected partner for the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme will operate and maintain the existing domestic airport until completion of the new international airport. The project is part of capacity building initiative in Mecca, which hosts the annual hajj pilgrimage and Umrah, which can be performed at any time of the year. A Corporation, which is a part of the World Bank, has been appointed as lead adviser to assist the structuring and implementation of the project.
