China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has started construction of a new terminal basin in Sokhna Port, on EgyptÂ’s Red Sea coast south of the Suez Canal, as part of a contract awarded by DP World. The project is expected to be completed in 2019. The Egyptian economy has been growing at a rapid rate in the last couple of years, stimulated by overseas investment and this has created demand for additional capacity at Sokhna Port, which is operated by a local division of DP World. This year container volumes are reported to be running around 10% higher than last year, while bulk shipments moving through the port are over 30% higher than in 2017. DP World intends to manufacture a second holder terminal at Sokhna, multiplying the port's current 1.1 million teu yearly limit. The improvement of the new bowl is a key piece of this venture, which will include huge digging, land recovery and quay development work.
