Floating Desalination Plants Project – Shuqaiq
The three units will be installed on barges off the Red Sea coast, initially opposite the desal facilities at Al Shuqaiq in the southwest, feeding the tanks there, and supplying Jazan and Asir provinces in Saudi Arabia. Norway-based Company has been awarded the BOO (Built-Own-Operate) contract. The scow mounted desalination plants have given crisis water supply to a few Saudi Arabian urban communities. They were first moored at Shuaibah, south of Jeddah, conveying water to Makkah and Jeddah in front of new supplies from the Shuaibah Independent Water and Power Project. They moved to Shuqaiq in the southern area in 2009 until the Shuqaiq Independent Water and Power Project came online a year later, and since 2011 they have been at their momentum area at the Yanbu-Madinah desalination plants complex on the Red Sea to serve the modern city of Yanbu and the city of Madinah in the west of the nation. The mobile plants will have the flexibility to travel along the coast to any of the reverse osmosis desalination plants in Saudi Arabia, providing additional capacity where needed. The three desalination units provide floating capacity of 150,000 m3/d of drinking water each produce 50,000 m3/d are expected to be operating by October 2019.
