  • Public Transportation

The project involves construction of a 942-kilometre-long railway line from the port of Aqaba to the Iraqi border near Traibil. This railway line will be built between Jordan and Iraq. The railway will speed up direct connection between Iraq and Jordan in order to support commercial and industrial co-operation between the two countries. The project will connect JordanÂ’s cities, industrial zones and logistical hubs to the world through Aqaba and border points to Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Its estimated net value, four years after constructions are concluded, is $4.65 billion and will cost $4.23 billion, according to Abeer Khanfer of the Project Management Unit at the Ministry of Transport. The Iraqi government expects the transport capacity of the railway line with Jordan to reach six-million tons a year. The top speed of the trains will be 180km/h. Notably, these figures are estimated on the basis of a 2010 feasibility study conducted by the ministry, for the 2015 project , The construction works begun in 2012, the railroad should have started bringing in $507 million per year as of 2020, and up to $1.04 billion annually by 2040, It is understood that Local Transport Ministry has signed an agreement with the Jordanian government for implementing this scheme. Both governments will now discuss the details of how to best construct the railway.
