Sugar Refinery Project - Sohar Port
This project will be located in Sohar Port and cover an area of 180,000 square meters and will cost approximately $350m (OMR134m) to build. one of several in Oman's pipeline – will produce more than 900,000 tonnes (t) of refined sugar per year .The first phase is envisaged to have a capacity of 700,000 tonnes, which will be raised to 1 million tonnes in the second phase. The proposed refinery will use state-of-the-art process technology by Tate & Lyle to produce high quality refined sugar. The scheme will be funded by way of term loan and equity. Construction work is expected to commence by the third quarter of this year and take 18 months to complete. European-grade manufacturing lines will be set up inside the factory, which Oman's state-run news agency said would use technology to boost refined sugar production, supporting the operational efficiency of the facility. 30% of the factory's workforce will be made up of Omanis. This figure will rise to 90% during the following 10 years, as part of the Oman Sugar Refining Plant efforts to support Omanisation, a strategy to promote employment among the sultanate's nationals.
