GCC Railway Project

  • New Project
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Public Transportation

The project involves construction of 2,177 kilometre-long railway transportation system to connect the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries. The Gulf Railway venture was endorsed by GCC part states at the 30th GCC summit in Kuwait City in December 2009. Saudi Arabia was the main GCC nation to have any railroad foundation at the time the venture was proposed. The first due date to finish the venture was 2018. This was delayed to 2021 at a gathering of GCC transport serves in Riyadh in April 2016. This railway transportation system will run along the coast of the Arab Gulf. Beginning from Kuwait, the railway will pass through the eastern Saudi Arabian city of Dammam , where it will connect to Bahrain through a bridge that runs parallel to the King Fahd Causeway before reaching Qatar via Salwa. UAE and the Kingdom would be connected through another line that will run through Bathaa. The railway line will also run through Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to reach Oman through Sohar and Muscat. Qatar and Bahrain will be connected by a bridge. Once completed, developers of the network plan to link the railway line with ones in Jordan, Syria and Turkey. The task has met hurdles by virtue of difficulties with the financing of the venture exacerbated by low oil costs, and absence of arrangement of the interests of the six states included. The normal date of culmination of the task is dubious, given the absence of clearness on the definite scale and working model of the venture. A joint venture of KuwaitÂ’s company and Saudi Arabia-based company have completed basic preliminary study. The client is planning to prepare a tender to invite international consultants to carry out a feasibility study. It is expected that the scheme will take at least 3 years for planning and design and 4 years for construction.
