This project involves widening and upgrading of Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah Highway in Bahrain. The aim of this project is to reduce traffic congestion and delays during peak hours . The highway is part of the strategic North-South link, connecting Manama, Sitra Industrial Area, Alba Plant and the Southern Governorate. It will also form part of the Future International Transportation Corridor with the possible Bahrain-Qatar Causeway. The scheme is divided into three phases. -Phase 1 consists of comprehensive traffic and transportation studies for widening and upgrading the highway to an uninterrupted motorway. -Phase 2 includes preliminary and detailed design for the four-lane dual carriageway, pedestrian and vehicular bridges, tunnels and underpasses, service roads and slip lanes. -Phase 3, which has yet to be awarded, is for construction implementation and supervision services. Scope of work includes the following: 1) Replacing the existing Alba Roundabout with a new three-level interchange; 2) Replacing the existing Nuwaidrat Roundabout with a new two-level interchange; 3) The upgrade of all highways and road leveling leading to the above-mentioned roundabouts, namely - Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Highway, King Hamad Highway, Estegal Highway, Moaskar Highway, Avenue 15, Refinery Avenue; 4) Utility related works include: Relocation of several 220kV, 66kV, 11kV, HV and LV cables, relocation of water distribution and water transmission pipelines, relocation of telecommunication network, relocation of twin 16" BAPCO gas pipelines, extension of BAPCO culvert and ducts across King Hamad Highway. The upgrade of all Highways and Road leveling leading to the above-mentioned roundabouts, namely: • Sh. Jaber Al Ahmed Al Subah Highway (SJAS Hwy) • King Hamad Highway (KH Hwy) • Estegal Highway • Moaskar Highway • Avenue 15 • Refinery Avenue A Local and UK based Contracting Co. has been awarded a contract for the design of roads and bridges as part of this project. Financing is being provided by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
