Bahrain soars towards modernization: Airport Modernization Program

The gulf island country, in response to a spurt in the number of passengers on board the transportation by air, Bahrain announced expansion plans termed as Airport Modernization Program (AMP).  The program in a nutshell will be responsible for accommodating the growing needs and face-lift the air conveyance facility. The Bahrain Air Company (BAC) is culpable to oversee the upgrading of the Bahrain International Airport (BIA) in terms of services, technology and operations. The BIA Development Forum (BIAD) and 2nd Middle East Air Cargo & Logistics Exhibition 2015 (MEACL) held on 01st April, 2015 had seen attendance from aviation professionals and logistics operators in order to discuss the expansion program placing importance over the contribution of such a project in the Bahrain’s Economic Vision.

The opportunities discussed to take this project further were airport logistics, sustainable airport development, planning and managements, airport technology, air transport related infrastructure. The first phase of expansion which involves terminal construction has been green flagged with the kick off of enabling work of stage one. The stage one enabling works package has been awarded to Cyprus Building and Road Construction Company which will work on shifting and relocate the existing facilities and utilities in the airport in order to clear the way for new construction. They are expected to complete the work till November 2015.



$1bn tender was to be issued by the BAC in connection with the airport expansion program in the end of April 2015. The Information Technology systems at the airport would be revamped and 9 bids for the development and maintenance of the same have been accepted by the BAC. Few of which are Sita, Lockheed Martin, Thales and UAE-Bahrain joint venture Bayanat Almoayed ICT.

 With regards to stage two of enabling works, the same commenced in April 2015 with tenders to be awarded in the month of May, 2015. Call to action for construction of Fire Station complete with infrastructure as a replacement, new security gate with the latest technology for being the main access point for staff on airfield, proviso for aviation fuel facility for Bahrain Aviation Fueling Company (BAFCO) including offices, maintenance workshops and operational equipment in three key areas to enable continuity in BAFCO’s efficient and safe refueling of aircraft, relocation of the existing Bahrain Airport Services (BAS) facilities including the company’s maintenance workshops, vehicle fueling stations and training facilities which will be done by 2016! A tender notice for ‘Soft Refurbishment of Arrivals Concourse L2.8 M of Terminal Building Wall and Ceiling Finishes’ is put up with the closing date of 13/05/2015.

The main construction work is to start by October 2015. Though bidders will be invited to participate in the tender, pre-qualified bidders numbering to 15 have already been shortlisted. The construction scopes ranges from building of a new passenger terminal (area 201,467 sq m) fairly capable to have room for about million passengers per annum (due to its 4x size!) to 18 airport stands which would permit 64 aircrafts to be handled together at any given point of time.

The tenders for the same will be awarded in the next six months. Attention to the seekers of business opportunities – the following will be the requisites of the main contract in the modernization program building of new terminal building, aircraft stands, a departure hall, check-in counters with security lanes and passport booths, entertainment options, baggage and conveyor facilities, handling equipment and screening systems for luggage, access car parks, and roads amongst others.

As mentioned earlier, this program has been undertaken to align with the kingdom’s 2030 vision thereby bringing to the fore its aviation industry showcasing its capabilities by emerging as a competitive advantage in the Gulf region and worldwide, and giving an impetus to employment opportunities, in conjunction with business opportunities.
